Participating in the Eucharist

A practical guide for worshippers

  • Arrive several minutes early and silence mobile devices.
  • Dress with modesty and respect for sacred worship.
  • Join the responses, singing, listening, and common postures of the assembly.
  • Observe the Eucharistic fast: ordinarily at least one hour before Holy Communion, except water and medicine.
  • Catholics conscious of grave sin should receive sacramental absolution before Holy Communion.
  • Those not receiving Communion may remain prayerfully in place.
  • Follow the parish’s directions for processions and seating.
Diocesan liturgical practice

Kneeling during the Eucharistic Prayer

The Diocese of Cubao directed that, beginning Holy Thursday 2025, the faithful kneel during the Eucharistic Prayer in diocesan Masses, in accordance with the diocesan catechesis and the practice established for the Philippines.

Those unable to kneel because of age, illness, disability, lack of space, or another reasonable cause may adopt a reverent posture suited to their circumstances.

When you cannot attend

Livestreams support prayer; they do not ordinarily replace attendance

Catholics who are physically able are called to participate in Mass in person on Sundays and holy days of obligation. A livestream can unite the homebound, sick, caregivers, and travelers in prayer, but watching online does not itself fulfill the obligation when a person can reasonably attend.

Cathedral Mass, confession, and sacramental schedules are based on the official Cathedral directory page. Because schedules are operational information, please confirm directly with the Cathedral at (02) 3413-0337 or (02) 3412-4227 before travel.
